Silymarin is a plant of the sedum family, which has long been used to improve liver function and stimulate bile secretion. In modern medicine, silymarin is a standardized extract made from the true silybum, containing the bioflavonoids silybin, silydianin and silichristin. The most active of them is the bioflavonoid silybin. Silymarin protects liver cells, reduces inflammatory processes in the liver, and promotes the regeneration of liver cells. Silymarin acts as an antioxidant, protecting liver cell membranes from the damaging effects of free radicals. Silymarin increases the level of glutathione, the main liver antioxidant, in liver cells. By protecting liver cells and improving liver function, silymarin helps with alcohol poisoning and other toxic substances that the liver must process and remove from the body. By improving liver function, silymarin inhibits the formation of cholesterol gallstones. There are many clinical trials that have shown the benefits of silymarin to the liver in alcoholic, viral (type B and C) hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, and even some liver cancers. Because of its liver protecting and liver cell regeneration effect, silymarin is useful for liver and gall bladder diseases.
